ULS Weddings: Vendor Spotlight - Off-White Makeup and Beauty
Sep2012 15

Ever since Megan came in to introduce herself to me last year, I've been recommeding her whole-heartedly to anyone who wants a little help looking extra special on their wedding day. She's professional, sweet, GORGEOUS, and her portfolio was so impressive - I knew that brides would feel comfortable in her capable hands and be impressed with their transformations. I was excited to learn more about Megan. We've seen each other at so many industry events and are in fairly regular contact about business, so it was fun to learn more about her, her business Off-White Makeup and Beauty, and get some beauty tips!

Q: Megan, tell us about your background and why you started your own business.

A: In 2003 I graduated collage with a BA in international business and at that time every 22 year old I knew had a BA in business. Being a bit unmotivated to head out into the job market, or lack thereof, I took a friend up on the offer to apprentice with her. She had been doing hair and makeup for brides in San Diego for 25 years and it seemed like a worthwhile thing to do at the time. Fast forward 3 years and I'm at home with my 6 month old son and can't even imagine leaving him to go and work 40 hours a week. So, like a lot of stay at home moms do, I turned to Craigslist and started advertising my makeup and hair services. After about 6 months I realized that the only people calling me to do makeup were brides! I stuck with it, restructured my portfolio to appeal to brides, and began growing my business. It was the only thing I knew of at the time that would allow me to stay at home with my son 5 days and week, while only working 2 days a week and making a pretty decent living at the same time.

Q: A lot of women don't trust anyone but the pros on their wedding day, especially when it comes to making them look their very best! What's your most-requested service that you provide to brides on their big day?

A: False eyelashes and airbrush foundation are the best things a bride can do for herself on the wedding day. Whether you want to look natural, or very made up, these two elements will add that extra touch every bride should have.

Q: What would you tell someone considering doing their own makeup on their wedding day?

A: Find a professional who specializes in bridal makeup and consult with them first to create your desired look. Make sure you play around with products beforehand and practice practice practice until it is perfected. Lastly, make sure to have a back up plan in case the nerves set in on the day of and you don't have a steady enough hand to apply everything.

Q: Getting a makeover can cause such a positive boost in self-esteem. Is that part of what draws you to this kind of work?

A: To the core of who I am, I feel that every woman should be able to walk around with her head held high wearing no makeup (Elise's note: HECK YES! See why I love this woman!?). I also feel that every woman should know and understand how makeup can change and enhance their natural features. I love nothing more than when a client sits down in front of me confident with who she is, and by the end of our appointment she is beaming ear to ear from her reflection in the mirror.

Q: So Megan, you're a self-described "Mother, Beauty Enthusiast, Entrepreness" - how do you balance everything?

A: I live on no more than 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night, I rely on multiple Microsoft Excel databases at any given time, own every Apple product know to man, and I have a deep passion for wanting to own my own business. The 5 stylists who work for me have a lot to do with it as well.

Q: If you could give women one piece of advice for their everyday beauty routine, what would it be?

A: Whatever brand or product works best to moisturize your skin, use it, use lots of it and use it often. Take the time to try out different options and find something that won't cause breakouts or excess oiliness, and then use it regularly. It is an added bonus if it come with an SPF already in it.

Now let's see some more before and after shots! And if you like what you see (and how can you not?!), contact Megan today to learn more and book her services!
