ULS WEDDINGS: Choosing a Venue4
Posted In Events:

For most people, coming through our doors to check out Urban Light Studios to see if we are the right fit for your wedding venue is among the first decisions you will be making about your wedding as a newly engaged couple. Congratulations! More than almost any other aspect of your wedding, the venue sets the tone for your wedding day. Here are some tips from our seasoned Events Manager on the hows and whens and whys to keep in mind when you come in for your tour!
- Start looking at venues 12-16 months in advance. We want you to get the date you have your heart set on just as much as you do, so make sure we have your dream date available before your tour. If you are flexible with your date we are often able to accommodate you. A huge perk of having your wedding at ULS is that it is indoors, so you don’t have to worry about our pesky, unreliable Seattle weather – we host weddings here year round.
- Decide if you want to do the ceremony and reception in the same place. Over 80% of the events that take place at Urban Light Studios are weddings that include both the ceremony and reception. Because there are so many places for your guests to explore during the transition between the two, this can ease the stress of having to find two separate locations.
- Think about your guest count. Our capacity at Urban Light Studios is 250 for a standing room only cocktail style reception, but that includes using all of our rooms on the main floor and our downstairs studio. If you want a formal, seated ceremony, 60-100 people is our sweet spot. However, because our space is so unique, many times couples will do a mix of seated and standing room. One couple even invited their guests to BYOC (Bring Your Own Cushion) during their ceremony! Another option here is to have a smaller ceremony and invite more guests to come party with you at your reception. We are happy to work with you to determine the best option for your wedding.
- Keep your budget in mind. ULS believes strongly that prices for anything “wedding” are way too inflated and often times downright absurd. We work hard to keep our prices affordable and to include as many things as possible in our venue rental fee, and we don’t spring extra, unexpected costs on you. Most couples can also literally cross off the décor line on their budget because our space is already awesome as-is. Here’s a quick list of what is included when you rent ULS that will make sticking to your budget easy:
- Our Main Space, lined by a 1920's brick wall with huge west facing windows
- Log Cabin room and Library (perfect for a bride and groom's room, respectively)
- Tiki Lounge with built-in bar and China room with wall-mounted monitor
- A large variety of lounge furniture, including couches, tables, chairs as well as additional in-house rentals
- Optional downstairs studio and art gallery (an extra 900SF of space, designed to look like a NYC loft)
- Private Outdoor Patio with patio furniture, lighting and Zen Garden
- 8-hour rental period with option to purchase overtime (up until 3am)
- Ability to purchase your own alcohol with no minimums or corkage fees
- Access to some of the city's best vendors, from florists to salons to officiants
- P/A system with iPod hook-ups
- Microphone
- Built-in screen and projector
- Wireless Internet
- Full kitchen with microwave, vintage gas range, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer
- Easy Loading and Unloading Area
- One hour unrestricted access to space for wedding rehearsal
- An on-site representative to make sure your event goes smoothly from beginning to end
- Cleaning
- Know what is NOT included. Urban Light Studios does not have an onsite caterer we make you use – instead we give you 4 options of caterers we love that represent all different food types and price points. They also have all the correct insurance we need so you don’t have to purchase one-day event insurance. To that end, your caterer is the vendor you will be working with for linens, flatware and glassware. You will also need to purchase a $10 Banquet permit if you serve alcohol. Other awesome add-ons you can purchase or rent directly from us include onsite chairs and tables (no delivery and pick up fees!) for $1/$10 each, respectively, various photography packages, rehearsal dinner space at The Cellar, and use of our downstairs studio and gallery (or just check out our Ridiculous Package if you want to have it all!). If you want to use an outside caterer, we require an outside catering fee and compliance with our Outside Catering Requirements. Oh, and because the staff here are all pint sized (vertically challenged?) we don’t move furniture. :)
- Read the literature we give you. I can almost guarantee that 99% of your questions will be answered in our FAQs.
- Stay organized! To help with that, here is Offbeat Bride’s official wedding checklist to keep you on track. Happy planning and we hope to see you soon for a tour!
